Elise Lente works with El Roi, helping women get out of Amsterdam's red light district. She has been doing it for years and she knows the women behind those windows by name.
Ninety-eight per cent of them experience violence of some kind. Between half and eighty per cent are trafficked. She told me about pimps making threats against women's babies, and about girls so traumatised their hair had started falling out — while the police, in her account, barely register any of it.
Tourists walk through this every night believing they are looking at an enlightened experiment. This film is about what Elise sees when she walks through the same streets.
